The Mattress Guide Mattress Types:
  • Innerspring Mattresses: Long the standard of the mattress industry, representing over 80% of the market, innerspring mattresses are distinguished from other types of beds by their use of coil springs for support.
  • Memory Foam Mattresses: Made from polyurethane, memory foam mattresses are firmer in cool temperatures and softer in warm temperatures. Because it reacts to changes in climate, it also responds to the body's natural heat, quickly molding itself to the shape of a warm body. Memory foam mattresses are denser and more supportive than standard mattresses.
  • Latex Mattresses: Believed by some to be the next big thing in the mattress industry, latex mattresses have been available for many decades but are currently experiencing resurgence in popularity. Relative to memory foam, latex offers equivalent support and durability, but is less conforming and has a faster recovery time, making it less "hot" and easier to change positions.
Firmness Levels:
  • Firm: Firm mattresses have flat-tops with no extra padding. Traditionally, firm to medium-firm mattresses have always been recommended for the relief of lower back pain. These mattresses score a 7.5 on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the hardest. Mattress height is approximately 8.5".
  • Cushion Firm: Cushion firm mattresses are medium-firm beds. They offer firm support with a slight cushion at the top. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the hardest, consumers rated cushion firm mattresses a 7. Mattress height runs from 9.5" to 11.5".
  • Plush: Plush mattresses are the softest you can get without purchasing a bed that has additional pillowtop padding. There is extra foam layering above the coils to provide extra comfort and plush support. Consumers gave this mattress a 6. Mattresses height is approximately 10”.
  • Pillowtop: Pillowtop mattresses have an extra layer of padding attached to the top to provide additional comfort. Generally speaking, these beds are not very firm, but they are incredibly comfortable. Pillowtop mattresses were also rated a 6 on a scale from 1-10, with 10 being the hardest. Pillowtop mattresses usually require deeper fitted sheets than the standard mattress because they can run up to 19.5 inches high.
  • Full: Sometimes still called "double," full beds are 53 inches wide, which is just 15 inches wider than a twin size (single). That leaves each partner only 27 inches of personal space, or about the width of a crib. Both twin and full sizes are approximately 75 inches long, which may be too short for some adults, especially men.
  • Queen: A queen bed is 60 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long—6 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a full size mattress. These added inches can make all the difference in comfort, especially for couples, and is most popular mattress size. However, with 30 inches of personal space, each adult still has 9 inches less width than if they slept alone in a twin bed.
  • King: King beds are 76 inches wide by approximately 80 inches long—about 18 inches wider than a queen. This is the closest a couple can come to having as much personal space (38 inches) as each would have on a twin bed. In fact, two twin extra-long beds pushed together are about the same size, an option that can offer a flexible arrangement for a guest room. There is also the "California King," which is 72 inches wide by 84 inches long—4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king.
