Most meats, when wrapped in the original supermarket packaging, should be used within a few months--ground meat should be used in like a month. However, if you repackage it in freezer zipper bags, it will last quite a bit longer. (We have a couple of supermarkets here that have amazing meat sales--like 35-40% off, or better yet, buy one/get one free). One thing I often do: you can buy a pkg of fold-lock top sandwich bags 150 of them for about $1 at the dollar stores. Things like cube steaks, pork chops, chicken breasts, legs and thighs....other smaller items, wrap them individually in those bags, then store in a quart or gallon size zipper freezer bag--then you can just take out how many you need for your meal. (I never know for sure how many people I'm feeding from one day to the next--this works good for me) Because I buy like that, it is rare for me to not have several different things in the freezer to choose from.
