Halloween is almost here! If you haven't had the time to decorate yet, no need to worry. A few frugal tricks can help you get in the spirit without spending a fortune—and help get your house set for trick-or-treaters.
My favorite front lawn decoration is a graveyard made from several humorous or scary cardboard tombstones. To make the tombstones, simply take several pieces of heavy cardboard and cut them into tombstone shapes. Paint the cardboard gray or just leave it as is if you are pressed for time. Write scary or humorous epitaphs on them with a black permanent marker. Here are a few ideas... "Here lies.. my wife, I bid her goodbye. She rests in peace and now so do I." or "See...I TOLD you I was sick!". My favorite would have to be.... "Here lies...the kid who egged my house last year."
Make a scarecrow by using a pumpkin for the head and old clothes for the body. Stuff the body with bunched up newspaper and let your imagination go wild with the rest of the details. Sit your scarecrow on a chair on the porch or up against a tree.
A bag of fake spider webs is a very cost effective way to decorate your bushes or front porch. You could also use white yarn to get the same effect. Make fake spiders by painting balled up newspaper or Styrofoam balls black and using black pipe cleaners for the legs.
Trash bags make great material for Halloween decorations. You can use white trash bags to make ghosts by stuffing one corner of the bag with crumpled newspaper to form a head and twisting it shut. Draw a spooky face and hang it up from a tree or the porch. Here is a great guide on how to make a trash bag tarantula. Also, be sure to check your local dollar or hardware store for Halloween themed trash bags. All you have to do is stuff them with raked leaves and you have an instant lawn decorations!
You can also take some plain tablecloths and paint or spray-paint a Halloween mural to be hung on the side of the house or on the front door. Use cardboard cutouts as stencils or just draw freehand. Get creative...the spookier the better!
