You see the cooking shows where they use fresh herbs and it makes the dish look so much more appealing and taste better. Growing fresh herbs is very easy and can be done anywhere. All you need is a container with dirt, seeds, water and light.
Cardboard egg crates make good containers. Place them in shallow trays to water them from the bottom. You can buy starter pots that come with their own trays at your local home and garden store. A small 8qt bag of potting mix should be enough to fill up two trays of starter pots or several egg crates.
Choose the herbs that you can possibly grow. Some herbs grow faster than others if not cut back regularly. Don’t plant more than you need. You can freeze the seeds that you don’t use and sew them again later. You can also grow herbs in the winter.
Once you’ve sewn your seeds they need to be looked after every few days to make sure the dirt is still wet. Keep them in a room with constant light until they are ready to be transplanted into a bigger pot. You can keep them anywhere in your house and the light can be as simple as a lamp.
Once the plants reach about 4” and start overcrowding the starter pots, it’s time to transplant them to regular pots. You can use regular potting soil when you pot them into bigger pots. You can keep them outside or put them in your windowsill and watch them grow into full luscious plants that you can harvest and use in your favorite dishes.
It’s not that hard to grow herbs and only takes a little time and a few dollars but the rewards are well worth it.
